One hundred and seven years ago the people of Port Elliot got their mail from a bootmaker’s shop. But in 1910 a grand new, federation style, Post Office opened in the Strand. It was the most impressive building in town [It probably still is] and it became the centre of community activity for a century. For many years it was also the telephone exchange. The people pulling plugs on phone cables used to sleep in the post office overnight.
The Post Office closed earlier this year and many people have wondered what might become of this heritage listed building. Well, the wait is over the grand old building has been converted into new art gallery, ‘The Strand Gallery’ and a printmaking studio. The Gallery will open on August 5th 2016.
The Strand Gallery is situated in the heart of Port Elliot, a small seaside town on the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula. The Gallery features works from local artists who are inspired by the seascape, nature and environment. The Strand gallery will focus on local and emerging artists and image makers under the direction of Ron Langman and Sonya Hender
During winter, the gallery will be open from 11.00am till 3.00pm on Fridays and Mondays and from 10.00 till 4.00 on Saturdays and Sundays or by appointment.
The gallery is available for private exhibitions by arrangement.
